The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main feature and make comparisons where relevant.
The graphic summarizes how the population over 65 years old of japan, Sweden and USA has been developing since 1940 and how is it expected to develop until 2040.
The percentages in 1940 were quite equal in the three countries (between 5% and 8%).
The first thing that attracts our attention is the fact that the trend in Japan opposites completly to the trend in the other two countries. Until 1990, the Japanese percentage experiments a slightly decrease. Meanwhile the percentage in the “occidental” countries increases progressively not only until 1990 but also is expected to raise until 1940.
Another thing that should be enphasized is the change in the swedish trend over 1995, which experimented a peak that made the proportion of the population over 65 years old the highest one.
So far so good, but talking about future, we have to notice that in 1930 the significant rise in the Japan trend will be really frightened, arriving to a 27% which will be above the rest of the countries reported in this diagram.
It is clear from the data given that the development in the proportion of people over 65 years old will suffer a process of equalation which will place Japan in the same percentages that the rest of the countries. This is a worry process because nowadays this percentage is more that twice as lower as the proportion of USA and Sweden.
