The burning of oil for transport especially in private cars is wasteful and environmentally irresponsible. Taxation on petrol and diesel fuel should be increased to very high level to discourage the use of private cars. To what extent would you support or reject this idea.
The question of whether governments should increase tax on fossil fuel with an aim to reduce the proportion of people using private cars is a controversial issue. Although arguments for and against it are varied and reasonable, I still believe that imposing high tax on petrol can bring about some advantages.
I strongly advocate that high taxation on petrol and diesel fuel to discourage the use of private cars is reasonable due to the following reasons. Firstly, when the number of cars is reduced, the practice of traffic jam will be dramatically improved. Even we will not have to witness many unexpected accidents. Secondly, if people have to suffer a significant tax burden, they will not spend money buying their own car but resort to public transport. Thanks to this, to certain extent, the severity of air pollution will be alleviated.
It may be argued that there is no reason for the governments to levy high tax on private cars’ owners through petrol and diesel fuel. This argument assumes that there are not many high quality of public transport for the citizens; therefore, they prefer to have their own means of transportation. However, this view will soon be flawed as the taxation from fossil fuel will be spent for upgrading not only road infrastructure but also variety of new and high-tech means of public transport. As a result, the public transport system will be highly accessible for the whole community.
In conclusion, I strongly hold to the view that it is a right decision for the governments to increase taxation on conventional fuel to reduce private car ownership. We can mitigate the negative effects of this decision by reasonably spending national budgets for the sake of the entire society.
