It is quite common for children to participate in paid work in certain countries. The opinions on this are two-sided; some are strongly opposed to letting children take part in paid work, while others believe that this provides valuable experiences to children. From my point of view, it is acceptable for children to be engaged in paid work, when they are under sufficient protection.

Many people argue that children are supposed to devote themselves to schooling, rather than to spend time in the workplace. A more important concern is that a lot of companies do not treat child labour fairly, giving no safe working conditions and reasonable salary. Some children are even forced to take up arduous work, which is prevalent in developing countries. That is why a number of people believe that child labour should be prohibited.

On the other hand, some consider paid work beneficial to children’s development. These people believe that learning must not be restricted to classroom, but should involve exposure to the workplace. It is generally agreed that children nowadays are not responsible enough, and are afraid of stepping out from their comfort zone by accepting new and challenging missions. By engaging themselves in paid work, however, children can develop some kinds of working virtues, such as loyalty, responsibility, cooperation and temperance. They will be of great value to children, which motivates some parents to encourage their children to work.

Several concluding remarks shall be made. Although the workplace is good for children to acquire practical skills, they should be allowed to work only under trustworthy employers or companies. Otherwise paid work will be disastrous instead of advantageous for children.
