What is the difference between Dedicated and Devoted?

Bob - 12/05/2012 14:59:14

They have very similar meanings because they both come from Latin and have the same origin. However, in today's society, the ways they are used have changed slightly.

Devoted is more likely to be used to talk about family or loved ones (WITH EMOTIONS) whereas Dedicated is used to talk about work or other interests (MORE ABOUT COMMITMENT).

For example:

  • He is devoted to teaching.

  • Their parents are devoted to their education.

  • She is devoted to her baby.

  • Peter spent his whole life to write a book which was dedicated to "Teaching Methodologies".

  • He sang the song which was dedicated to his girlfriend.

  • Her dedication to medicine was so great that she had time for little else.
