Cricket, traditionally an English sport, is becoming more and more popular sport in the sub-continental countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia and many more. In my opinion, there are mainly two reasons for this popularity, good performance of the team and financial reward they are receiving nowadays.

To begin with, I think the main reason for this increasing popularity is excellent performance by teams over the period of a time. Due to this, majority of the nations who plays cricket have won the ICC world cup at least once. For example, before 1983 ICC world cup, Cricket was not famous among people of the India, they were following another sport Hockey, which was one of the famous sports at that time due the exceptional performance of our Hockey players. This is the reason India is one of the top performers in all ICC tournaments and holding 1st rank in One Day (ODI) cricket.

Another reason of popularity is, financial reward offered to players these days. In terms of money, cricket players earning a huge amount of money from various adverts, league contracts such as IPL(Indian Premier League) and BBL(Big Bash league). To illustrate, in India, a report by The Tribune showed that an average earning of cricket player is 80% more than the average package of Hockey player.

In conclusion, although in countries such as India, Hockey is a national sports game but people who lives there are passionate about cricket because of the excellent performance by prior players and a huge amount of money as a reward to their abilities.
