The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The first pie chart illustrates the energy expenditure and how is used in Australian domestic environment, whereas the second pie chart reports the greenhouse gas emission resulting from water heating, refrigeration, heating, cooling, lighting and other appliances.

Australians use most of the energy on heat sources (42% air and 30% water), followed by refrigeration (7%) and lighting by only 4%. Other domiciliary appliances consumed around 1/6 of the total energy meanwhile cooling showed the lowest expenditure by 2%.

According to greenhouse effect studies, warming up water remained the main source of pollution. On the other hand, heating systems were responsible for only 15%, matched by refrigeration. Furthermore, light and air cooling systems showed almost no effect on greenhouse gas emissions. The grand pollutant, accounted by 28%, was other appliances.

Overall, comparing the two diagrams, water heating was not only one of the major energy consumers but also the greatest polluting agent. In contrast, refrigerating and illumination systems proved to be the most eco-friendly in an average Australian family unit.
