The table shows the figures for imprisonment in five countries between 1930 and 1980. The countries included are the following: Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada. From an overall perspective Great Britain was the only country that showed a steady increase with the number of imprisonment from 1930 to 1980. The remaining four countries manifested fluctuations in the 50 year period.

In 1930, Australia had about 65,000 prisoners. The number dropped gradually to 40,000 through 1940 and 1950. But it slightly rose again starting 1960 until 1970. On the other hand, New Zealand’s prisoners dramatically decreased from 100,000 to about 55,000 in the year 1930 to 1940 and further decreased little more 10 years after. But from 1960 to 1980 it gradually rose until it reached 85,000. United States showed an alternate upward and downward pattern starting from 1930 to 1980. They also had the most numbers of prisoners that peaked to about 150,000 in 1980. Canada was the only country that showed a continuous decline in the number of prisoners in the 50 year period except for a slight increase in 1950.

The five different countries showed fluctuations with the number of prisoners from 1930 to 1950.
