Food has we know it today has been modified genetically to meet the needs of the world’s population. Whether this substantial scientific intervention represents the evolution for the human being or not is a debatable subject, as this also counts for the use of chemically modified crops, which are blamed to cause hazardous health issues worldwide.
Firstly, farmers have found genetically modified crops easier to grow; these crops do not need fertilizers or pesticides because these substances have been already included in their seeds, through the scientific intervention. For instance, in south of Brazil, it is seen large extensions of genetically modified corn that grow prosperously in those regions. Farmers then feel benefited from human intervention and see this as truly development.
However, these scientific involvements are clearly not free from, mainly, health problems. It has been demonstrated that this type of modified corn is causing more and more cancer related diseases and there is a sudden decrease in life’s expectancy in several regions of the world. In Brazil, for example, the rates of stomach cancer have increased dramatically due to consumption of chicken fed with genetically modified corn. Although rates and numbers speak for themselves, the economic convenience will not prevent farmers from using these crops.
To conclude, I strongly agree that the quality of the food we consume today has changed for the worse, in addition to being a hazard to our health. However, I think that there is not much to be done about this situation because more benefits than drawbacks are seen worldwide; besides, technological and scientific advances are always considered as synonym of progress, especially to farmers.
