These days, due to the booming globalization, it seems that more people are immigrating into other countries than ever before. This trend also prompts a controversial topic of whether immigrants should integrate into the local traditions or continuously nurture their own cultural heritages by founding a minority community. By way of my thinking, newcomers can also observe local customs while preserving their cultural foundation in smaller groups.
First of all, adopting the local culture and obey the social rules are fundamental prerequisites to have a peaceful life in a new country. There is no doubt that no one can stand outside the organization and being member of an united society gives you sense of belonging. Moreover, immigrants could receive a variety of benefits as well, such as, neighbor supports, government subsidies, social recognition, etc.
On the other hand, many people are afraid of losing their intrinsic values which are built from cultural basis of their motherlands. That also means they remain not many traditional values to pass on to future generations. Hence, creating a nuclear community of countrymen might be a great idea.
However, focusing on their own group does not mean they ignore norms of the adopted nation. The coexistence of different cultures can benefit both immigrants and locals. The positive effects on newcomers are listed above and for locals, an environment with the mixture of differing cultures is the key factor to attract skilled workforce from all over the world.
By way of conclusion, resettling in a whole new country means having to have greater degree of flexibility. Preserving the cultural traditions when being with families and friends for maintenance in the future but still be able to blend into the local culture for the sake of societal homogeneity.
